There is only one world to live in.
Support us, to conserve this world
Since the end of 2021, we have been implementing a new family planning programme
(FPP) with our local partner PAMOZA in the Karonga district in northern Malawi, which
on the one hand continues the related activities we started in 2013. On the other
hand, existing and newly founded youth clubs are to be integrated into the project
in order to be able to offer youth-friendly health services on a broader basis. However,
in the context of this project, we had to realize that the few existing youth clubs
that are dealing with sexual health issues are largely dysfunctional. In addition,
there are only very few contact persons for sexual and reproductive health (SRH)
issues in the youth clubs, the few that exist are not sufficiently trained and the
individual clubs are not networking with each other.
This situation gave rise to the concept of extending the idea of the youth center
established in 2017 at St. Mary's Girls School to a network of specially trained
peer groups. This network of peer groups will be established in a new project, thus
allowing an improved and sustainable offer of youth-friendly health services.
The most important figures of this new project:
Region: Karonga and Chipita districts, Northern Malawi.
Duration: July 2022 to December 2023
Budget: approx. 80,000 €, including BMZ funding
Local partner: Pamoza Tingakwaniska
The main objectives of the project:
- A network of youth clubs with specially trained peer-groups enables adolescent girls
and boys in Karonga and Chitipa districts to increase their knowledge on SRH issues
and change their behavior by having better access to youth-friendly health services
(YFHS).
- Thus, in particular adolescent girls and young women will be empowered to maintain
control over their bodies and make informed decisions about sexual and reproductive
health. However, young men of the same age are also included in the project. They
will all be given access to YFHS by trained staff and made aware that their future
depends on the choices they make today.
- Through targeted information campaigns, radio broadcasts and use of social media
platforms, the public - parents, community leaders, local authorities - will be sensitized
to these issues and mobilized to actively advocate for and support youth-friendly
health services.
- Communication events involving multimedia platforms, music and theatre performances,
focus group discussions and an exhibition at the Karonga Museum will stimulate a
change in social behavior and revise preconceived negative values and attitudes of
parents, traditional leaders, teachers and the youth themselves, and will also create
an increased demand for YFHS.

In the meantime, we have received funding for this project from the German Federal
Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Nevertheless, we are still
dependent on your donations so that we can reliably finance our own share for this
project.
