Family Planning and Information on Reproductive und Sexual Health in Karonga
With this project we are still focusing on the following main goals:
● Education on sexual and reproductive health issues
● Promotion and expansion of youth-friendly health services
● Improved and simplified access to contraceptives
● Strengthening the rights of adolescent girls and young women
- Reducing the number of unintended teenage pregnancies
- Limiting population growth through family planning and voluntary birth control.
At the end of 2013, we launched and financed a family planning programme (FPP) in
the Karonga district of northern Malawi, which is carried out by the Pamoza-Tingakwaniska
Youth Organisation since 2021.
Group Village Kamtenthenga, TA Wasambo-Karonga summarises the most important result
of our family planning programme as follows:
In my area, there has been a high prevalence of unplanned pregnancies which often
lead to early marriages. The project has played a significant role in reducing unplanned
pregnancies as youths now have learnt more on SRH which includes how they can prevent
unplanned pregnancies. So this is a good thing for our communities.
In order to achieve these goals as quickly and effectively as possible, existing
structures that are already points of contact for our target group, in particular
health centres and youth clubs, are integrated into this project and provided with
the financial and human resources necessary for these tasks.
These activities are also supported by specially produced thematic radio programmes
and live streams on Pamoza's Facebook page, in which questions from the public on
the topic of SRHR are answered.

In 2024 we were facing by many difficulties and obstacles due to flooding and high
inflation of over 30%. Nevertheless, nearly 150 visits to the four health centres
supported in the project area, schools and youth clubs as well as remote communities
took place as part of our family planning programme. During theses visits the two
nurses employed in the project and employees of our partner Pamoza are providing
information on SRHR issues and offer family planning services and Youth Friendly
Health Services.
More than 6.000 women made use of the family planning services and received modern
contraceptives.
