Opening Session of the Councelling Centre on SRHR and Family Planning Issues
End of 2023 we have started a new project, for which we are receiving funding from
the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The establishment of a counselling, information and service centre on sexual and
reproductive health and family planning issues in Northern Malawi
The event was accompanied by traditional dances as well as various music and themed
theater performances.
With this Pamoza Youth Friendly One Stop Center, a protected space is now available
where young people can access Youth Friendly Health Services and information on Sexual
and Reproductive Health and Rights in a confidential environment.
On June 5th, 2025, the Pamoza Youth Friendly One Stop Center ( POS Center ) was officially
opened by the District Commissioner, Frank Mkandawire, after a construction period
of just over a year.
In attendance were representatives from the district government, various public institutions,
traditional leaders, youth and school clubs, the GIZ, as well as many members of
the community from all age groups.
Khumbo Mkandawire, Acting Director of Planning and Development, Karonga District,
said :
As a district, we are very happy with the creation of such a space for the youth.
The youth in Karonga have for a long time longed to have a youth Friendly one stop
centre but as the government we had plans to construct one but with our financial
muscle, we could not do it anytime soon so Pamoza Tingakwaniska has done a very commendable
thing. I thus call on the youth to utilize this space so they can live healthy lives.
Unfortunately, just a few weeks before the opening, the state electricity company
made an worrying announcement: following the failure of a large hydroelectric power
plant, the project area has been subject to strict electricity restrictions since
May of this year. Power is currently being cut off for 6 to 8 hours a day, probably
for months if not years.
In order to prevent this from affecting the operation of the POS center in the long
term, we are planning the energetic improvement of the POS center as soon as possible,
in particular to integrate a solar system with electricity storage and to build our
own water supply in order to make the center independent of local suppliers
We will have to finance the costs of these short-term measures, estimated at EUR
40 to 50 thousand, in addition to our already planned project expenditure
We are therefore urgently dependent on your help and donations in order to continue
our projects successfully and to be able to overcome unexpected problems.
